Lara in the pen with Luca and Jilly

Laura

Linda, the one who runs Greyhound Adoptions of Ohio, is out of town for the weekend. As the rescue's kennel is full right now, it is difficult for other volunteers to handle all the turnouts. To make things easier a number of volunteers are fostering dogs for the weekend. We have the pleasure of fostering a beautiful two year old brindle named Laura. She has a great disposition and not a shy bone in her body. She is going to make someone a wonderful pet. There will be pictures posted later.

Stone Meadow Farm

We just returned from an eleven day vacation in Florida. Of course the dogs had to be boarded and we chose a place in Atwater called Stone Meadow Farm. They only take in about five dogs at a time and there are no cages. The dogs are free to roam the house and be part of the family. They provide lots of beds of all types and sizes to give your dog plenty of options for lounging and lots of toys to keep them occupied. They have large fenced-in outdoor "meadows" for the dogs to run and play. They take pictures and videos which are provided to you online when you pick up your dog. Our dogs received lots of attention and seemed quite comfortable. I expect they will be excited next time we take them there just as they are when we pull in at the dog park. We were very happy with the care and attention given to our dogs during the stay and would highly recomend Stone Meadow Farm if you have a well behaved dog in need of boarding. www.stonemeadowfarm.com

Jill is making a wonderful recovery. She will be out of her splint in another week or two. Her x-rays were reviewed by an orthapedic surgeon at O.S.U. (Dr. Dyce) and he doesn't feel anything else will be necassary.

What a year...

This has been one crappy year. Thursday night Jilly broke her leg running at the dog park. She's okay, but will be in a splint indefinately now. She's been miserable. She has to be carried up and down the stairs. These poor dogs can't seem to catch a break.

Jill's Surgery

Our two and a half year old female, Jilly, had surgery the other day. She had a growth that needed to be removed and tested as it could be cancerous. Everything went well and she got her dental done at the same time. We won't have the biopsy results for a couple days yet, but the vet says it looks like it probably is not cancerous after all.

Luca is home and well.

Luca came home yesterday at lunchtime. He is doing great. Back to his old self and full of energy. He has to limit his food intake for a couple days though and he is not happy about this.

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Yeah! Luca comes home today.

We got a call from the vet today. Luca is eating and drinking and no more vommiting. We will pick him up on our lunch break and he'll spend the rest of the day at work with us. Jilly will be so glad to have him back. She's done nothing but pace around the house looking for him and sniffing his bed since Luca left for the vet.

Update on Lucca

We visited Lucca today at the animal hospital on our lunch break. Although he is clearly not feeling well, he has improved quite a bit. He has been on an I.V. but he is now starting to drink on his own again. Hopefully, he will be coming home tomorrow morning. We are just waiting for his blood work to come back.

WARNING - The Dangers of Drying boxes

This message was sent to me at my Yahoo Group by http://profiles.yahoo.com/maggiemitch1

One of my newest friends on Myspace is Nancy (Mom to Maggie) in ROCKPORT, Massachusetts. Nancy and I have been getting to know each other by messaging and last night she told me how she tragically lost her first grey, Riva. With Nancy's kind permission she has allowed me to share the details of Riva's tragic death as a warning to other Grey lovers. Please feel free to repost this everywhere you can so that we can get the word out on how dangerous these drying boxes can be.Many Thanks

Before Maggie there was Riva and I want tell you how we tragically lost her last summer. My husband was away for a few days and I decided to take Riva to a groomer for just a good shampoo. I dropped her off at 8am and waited to get a call that she was done, so I could pick her up.I didn't get a call until 1pm and the groomer simply stated that Riva was ready. I went to pick her up and when I went in to get her she was lying on the floor in a pool of sweat, panting rapidly and when I looked into her eyes I knew she was gone. I asked the groomer what was going on and she said Maggie must be a lttle overheated. I asked for help and had to pour Riva into the backseat of my car. She bled on the way and when I arrrived at vet tech the vet met me at the door and took one look at her and said she was gone. She had a temp of 108.7, the vets tried everything but with no success. I was told that the groomer had put Riva in what was refered to as a drying box, which completely encloses the dog in plexiglass and pours heat in to rapidly dry a dog. You can imagine what a horror it was for us to discover Riva has basically roasted to death from the inside out. It was an outrage and the groomer has never apologized then or now, and has never taken responsibility for this tragedy. Our friend that works for that law firm took the case pro bono and we are suing the groomer and her business. Until this happened we had never heard of drying boxes for dogs nor had any of the hundreds of people we have sinced talked about this. We have had local press do stories on this and it has raised the public awareness that is far reaching. The most important issue is the awareness, but we want an Apology from the groomer and our expenses reimbursed and a donation to be made in Riva's name to greyhound rescue. We are in the process of settling this mess and just want it to be over.In the meantime we have testified before a senate subcommitee to pass a bill requiring that drying boxes be outlawed and that groomers be licensed. If we can pass this legislation and it looks very positive, we will be the first in the country to do so. The bill will be called Riva's bill, so that will become something positive out of such a tragedy. I wanted to share this with you, so that you can share it with dog owners and anyone that is interested. Drying boxes are used worldwide by some groomers, if you talk to the average groomer most will say they wouldn't even consider using one because they realize that they are almost a form of animal abuse and can easily turn into a situation like the one I experienced. Let's keep on protecting our grey friends anyway we can. I feel this a story that needs to be told.

Lucca Admitted to Stow Animal Hospital

Well, Lucca is now at the hospital. He will spending at least a couple nights there because he can't keep fluids down and needs an I.V. We hope to have him home soon. The vet is treating him for a bacterial infection right now.

Lucca is sick today.

We had to take Lucca to the vet last night. He's been unusualy lazy, had littel appetite, and he started vommiting. The poor guy has to take two medications for the next couple days and no food for twenty four hours.

Hi. We have two greyhounds. Lucca (a.k.a. Lover Boy/ Power Vallie) will be three this month. Jill (a.k.a. Nancy's Jill) is slightly younger. Lucca is the black and white, or as I call him the "cow print" standing near the water. Jill is the brindle walking toward the camera. We adopted our hounds about a year ago and they have been a wonderful addition to our family.
